If someday they say of me that in my work I have contributed something to the welfare and happiness of my fellow man, I shall be satisfied. ~ George Westinghouse

Labor Day weekend is approaching. You tally up the items on your grocery list, scanning the newspapers for good sales while checking the weather forecast. As you amble out of the pantry, you head up the stairs to grab your things so you can leave your house.

You trip over a pile of clothes: slightly used men’s jeans that your husband wore five years ago on your summer vacation, long maxi dresses that don’t quite fit your shapely frame anymore, shoes that you do not even wear anymore.

Disgruntled with their intrusion into your walking space, you get what you came for and run to the car.

~Somewhere on a downtown park bench amongst trees that give life sits a man with shoes whose rubber soles flap against the hot pavement and he has given up on life.~

There is an organization that is a present help in time of his need.

You reach your local store. Tucked behind a derelict pay phone stands a woman with a wig turned sideways, eyes red from whatever personal trial she has endured. Even though the sun is beaming in the 100s, she draws the tattered blanket around her to hide clothes that barely cover her body. As you are placing food and drinks in your cart for a cookout, she is digging around in her metal cart of belongings, wondering how she can get out of her current circumstances.

~Somewhere in the downtown Jacksonville area on a Saturday morning doors of a church’s educational building open for homeless men and women to find clean clothes. As volunteers offer words of encouragement, the men are entertained by a male church member who makes them feel like a celebrity.

He tells them they look like Al Green or Jay Z while walking out with bags of donated designer jeans and dress shirts and a big smile bridging over troubled waters.~

There is an organization that is called to comfort those who are comfortless.

You exit the store and return home. Those clothes and shoes are still there waiting on you. You remember the woman you have just seen. You gather up the items and place them in your trunk, thinking of someone who could benefit from them.

There is an organization who is in need of your donations.
