When Kim Met Mary: How a Husband’s Vision Guided Her to the Next Level
I had gone to my husband expressing a desire to change up some things, mainly the home life. I had worked full-time for the City of Jacksonville. With the church and the kids, I felt overwhelmed and I told him I needed something different. He told me to come home, but I wanted to be active and involved while the kids were at school and in daycare. Then he mentioned Mary Kay. At the time, I was not the poster child for Mary Kay because I did not wear makeup and I couldn’t sell anything. That was in January 2000. Six months went by, and my husband was still pushing the idea of Mary Kay. I did not feel like that was what I needed to do, but I thought that he was not going to stop. So I signed up to get him off my back. He was so excited that he went out and bought the products for me. At that point, I felt that everything was going too fast for me; I said that I would only try it first. He mentioned that I hadn’t given it a try. How did I know that it wasn’t something I could not do? So I decided to give it a try. The women came over and had a good time, and I sold $400 in products.
“Knowledge is power. It is more powerful when you can give it away.”~Kimberly McKissick
Kimberly developed her selling skills by attending training, getting to know the products and the business as a whole, learning how to win prizes and how to be consistent with selling. With the online training, weekly face-to-face sessions and starter kits, she gained the much needed knowledge to grow into a top-selling consultant.
Learning how to sell was important. Learning how to connect with her clientele was more worthwhile to Kimberly. She wanted to help women achieve a look they had been looking for by being a help, not a hindrance.
Kimberly had sensitive skin. She tested the products on herself to see how they worked with her skin. She felt that she couldn’t sell the product if she couldn’t work it. This approach gave her insight on one-on-one consultations. Every customer must have skin care customized to his or her needs because no two faces are alike. In a class setting, her clientele can test out products and find out which ones best match their skin. While they are perusing the different range of choices, Kimberly counsels them on fitting the products into their daily regime.
Soon the customers will react. Either the product doesn’t work for them, or that signature smile spreads over their faces.
The smile that confirms,“This is great. I can see myself really doing this.”
The smile that seals another introduction to the Mary Kay brand.
Kimberly McKissick has been with Mary Kay for 14 years.
Lessons Learned During Her First Year as Sales Director
When leading women, you have to know everybody is different. You have to be willing to manage a group of women who have different types of emotional levels and things going on in the home. As a sales director, I had to be sensitive to how they are feeling and know how to guide them in the direction they want to go, and at the same time, really meet the needs that they want to be in this business and that it is a God-given gift. The leadership skills that Mary Kay teaches you mesh together to give the women what they need to be successful.
Being a sales director has been rewarding, and it gives me that edge.
Lady K’s Traits of an Effective Leader
- Listening
- Communication
- Motivation
Kimberly further explained these traits:
There is a difference between listening & communication. Listening is being really in tune with what’s going on and knowing how you are going to respond to what they are doing. Communication is a way of getting my message across through various mediums such as texts, emails, social media & etc. A lot of people misinterpret written words, so I have to make sure you are hearing my heart through my communication. My communication style must match what I am trying to share with you.
Motivation means not just on the level of talking about the business model, but also building your employees up as a person. A lot of women have a low self-esteem. You have to talk to them and build them up. You have to teach them to think differently and build their confidence.
Lady K’s Kernels of Knowledge for New Minority Businesswomen
- Do your research
- Know your target markets
- Be ready to have that business owner mentality
- Be marketable
- Be a risk taker
- Build your belief
You must be familiar with the area you are trying to get into as a business owner. Not everything is sellable to everybody, so you have to give the people what they want. Do the things you need to do because everything is on you. It is just you who is making things happen out there.
Lady K. Defines Beauty & Declares Current Beauty Trends
Beauty is internal. I have found that even when people say they are not the prettiest, their whole attitude, countenance and posture can outweigh that. Being positive puts you in a perspective. The person brings a whole new freshness when he or she walks into the room. You see a person’s genuineness and heart, and his or her light shines through.
The beauty trends that are popular right now are 1) lightweight, but concealing makeup, such as foundation 2) lip colors—experimenting with fun shades 3) wow brows—shaping brows according to the shape of a woman’s face 4) matching makeup shades for the face as well as the brows.
Mary Kay: Maximizing Beauty By Discovering What You Love
National Girlfriends’ Day has come and gone. Hundreds of Jacksonville women, floating on a cloud of sisterhood, flood every retail store to take advantage of Tax-Free Weekend.
Among the crowd, one particular woman stands out. It is not her physical beauty that attracts others to her. It is the hidden woman of her heart. It is the ornament of her gentle spirit. It is the inner beauty that shines through any situation, whether triumphant or troublesome.
As the women leave behind 75% clearance sales and draw closer to her, she stands beside her pink SUV, edifying the crowd.
She shows them the strength of their confidence, letting them know that it was always there like Hagar’s well of water.
She teaches them the resilience of the woman to lead by conviction and not convenience, like Esther.
After she is finished, a lone hand raises in the crowd. The woman asks, “All of that is good and all. But, girlfriend, who did your brows?”
She shifts to the right and reveals the Mary Kay sign. “How can I help you discover what you love today?”
